As one of the round varieties of squash, Butternut is known for a sweet and nutty flavor. As this plant is sensitive to frosts, wait until after the last frost date to plant your transplants. As butternut squash plants need to be watered and fertilized regularly and, when added to your garden, should be planted in hills. When it’s time to harvest, the squash should have a hard rind before being picked.
If you plan to add butternut squash to your garden, we suggest:
Harvest: 88 days. Exposure: Full sun. Water Needs: Keep evenly moist, especially in dry times.
Fertilizer: Fertilize at planting and again as flowers develop.
