Growing Oregano

Oregano is an herb that shows up in a variety of cuisines and foods. From use in high-quality tomato sauces to a sub from your local pizza joint, oregano is used for its strong flavor. As this plant can be grown all year long, here are some tips for growing this herb either in a pot or in the ground:

  • Keep in a sunny spot, unless you live in zone 7 or higher. In these areas, oregano will need some afternoon shade.
  • Soil should have a pH of 6.5 to 7.0, with some slow release fertilized added immediately after planting.
  • In late spring, cut back the plant to make bushier.
  • In winter, use mulch if the plant is kept outside or, if potted, the plant can be moved indoors to a sunny window.
  • Harvest oregano often. Once the plant is six inches tall, start cutting off sprigs in mid-summer.
